Unit 26 - Choreographing dance

Wednesday 17th January
Today I was beginning to learn the choreography for the dance show which will be performed in May.
To start the session we carried out a warmup. This warmup was very thorough because we needed to make sure that all of the muscles in the body were warm because today was going to be quite a full on session because we had a lot to get through. We started the warmup sitting on the floor where we carried out some side, neck and head stretches. We then stood up to carry out some more stretches which involved more parts of the body. After the warmup, we then moved on to learning the choreography.
Molly was not in the session today because she was ill so this gave Laura and I the opportunity to start working on the choreography for the dance show. We are starting to learn the choreography now because I have to learn a lot of dances in time for the show. It works out to approximately 4 hours of teaching per routine. This is about 2 lessons to learn each dance because some weeks I will not be able to attend the session due to holidays and exams. We need to make sure that we stay to this schedule to ensure that everything is complete in time for the show.
The first dance that I am learning is to the song ‘Beautiful Trauma’ by P!NK and will be in the middle of the show. This dance will tell the part of the story where everyone is invited to the Christening except for Maleficent. The routine will show he anger and frustration towards Steffan as he has betrayed Maleficent. At the moment, we are currently using the explicit version of this song and we are aware that we are unable to use it for the show because we may have young people in the audience. Therefore, we are currently in the process of looking for a clean version of the song. As soon as we can find and download a clean version, we will begin to use this when rehearsing.
Over the past week, Laura has been working on the choreography for this routine. However, when she was teaching me the routine, there were a few bits where I helped her to fill in the gaps to piece the choreography together. I was also given the opportunity to put in any moves which I liked.
By the end of the lesson, we had managed to choreograph up to 1:17 of the song. This isn’t quite half way through the song so we may have to work a bit faster or for a bit longer next week to ensure that we get all of the choreography taught to stay on track with the busy schedule that we have made.
